Welcome to Fidgety Fox Publishing

Big stories. Easier reading.

We’re an independent publishing house with a simple idea:

Reading shouldn’t feel like hard work to enjoy a great story.

Fidgety Fox creates easy-reading fiction for young adults and adults, with a love for fantasy, science fiction and stories that take you somewhere completely different.

We’re passionate about creating books that feel calmer and easier to settle into — without taking away the adventure, mystery, emotion, romance, danger or imagination that makes us want to read in the first place.

Because easy reading doesn’t mean simple stories.

It just means finding a different way in.

Stories for minds that wander

Some of us can sit with a book for hours.

Some of us read three pages, make a cup of tea, come back, reread the same paragraph, notice something outside the window, remember something completely unrelated…

…and eventually find our way back to the book.

We think there’s room for both.

Fidgety Fox is creating books with dyslexic, neurodivergent and easily distracted readers in mind, as well as anyone who simply prefers a more approachable reading experience.

Clearer pages. Comfortable layouts. Stories that move.

And most importantly — a proper story worth coming back to.

Fantasy. Sci-fi. And a little bit of magic before bed.

Our books are beginning with the stories we love most.

Fantasy & science fiction

Easy-reading fiction for young adults and adults who want strange worlds, mystery, adventure, relationships, danger and characters they can disappear with.

No watered-down imagination.

Just books designed to be easier to get into — and harder to put down.

Bedtime stories

We’re also developing easy-reading bedtime stories designed for adults to read with their children.

Because reading difficulties don’t disappear when you become a parent.

We want bedtime reading to feel enjoyable and achievable for the person reading aloud too — creating stories that children can become excited about and adults can feel comfortable reading.

Dyslexic writers. Dyslexic readers.

Accessibility shouldn’t stop when the reader reaches the first page.

We also need to think about who gets the opportunity to write it.

Somewhere there’s a brilliant storyteller who doesn’t think they’re a writer because spelling isn’t their strength.

Someone with an incredible fantasy world in their head who finds getting it onto paper difficult.

Someone who has been told they’re “not academic” and quietly decided books aren’t a career for them.

We want those people to keep telling stories.

As Fidgety Fox grows, we want to work with dyslexic and neurodivergent writers, helping develop new voices and creating opportunities for storytellers who might not have followed the traditional route into publishing.

Your spelling can be edited.

Your grammar can be developed.

Your imagination is the bit we can’t teach.

How writing with us will work

Why a Fidgety Fox?

Well… because it fits.

A fox is curious, observant, adaptable, independent and rather good at finding another way around something when the obvious route doesn’t work.

And they’re not particularly interested in doing things simply because that’s how they’ve always been done.

That feels familiar.

The Fidgety part represents minds that don’t always sit still — the thinkers, daydreamers, doodlers, idea-jumpers and people whose attention occasionally disappears somewhere else entirely.

Not every neurodivergent person experiences the world in the same way, of course. But curiosity, movement, adaptability and finding your own route are qualities that inspired the personality behind Fidgety Fox.

And there’s a much simpler reason for the fox. Our founder, Amie L. Spurgeon, absolutely loves them.

Foxes have always been one of Amie’s favourite British wildlife animals, so when she began imagining a publishing house built around doing things a little differently, the name felt right.

A little restless. A little curious. A little unconventional.

Very Fidgety Fox.

Sometimes you have to become what you need.

Fidgety Fox was founded by Amie L. Spurgeon, a dyslexic author, creative and storyteller.

Growing up, Amie loved stories but didn’t always find reading easy.

She went on to become a business owner and employer, return to education as a mature student and graduate with a BA (Hons) in TV & Film Production, work within film and television, develop scripts and creative projects and, perhaps most importantly for this particular story, become a published author.

Almost ten years ago, she published her first fantasy novel, Strange Emotions. Unfortunately, she fell into the trap of vanity publishing houses that describe themselves as hybrid publishing and did not promote the book for its easy-reading properties. Amie felt she would rather keep the rights in her own hands until the time was right.

Now she’s bringing it back.

While creating the new Author’s Definitive Edition, Amie found herself thinking about the same problem that had bothered her when she first began writing: where are the books for people who love stories but find reading difficult? And what about the dyslexic writers who have those stories inside them?

Instead of waiting for somebody else to build that publishing space, she decided to start building it herself.

That’s Fidgety Fox.
