Meet Amie
Author of Strange Emotions and founder of Fidgety Fox Publishing.
Hi, I’m Amie.
I’m an author, dyslexic reader, creative and someone who has never really taken the conventional route to get where I want to go.
Reading wasn’t easy for me growing up. I loved stories and had a huge imagination, but actually sitting down and getting through a book was another matter. I wanted to read fantasy and disappear into completely different worlds. Still, sometimes there were so many complicated words, names and descriptions that I’d lose the story while trying to work out what I was reading.
And I don’t think I was alone in that.
That became one reason I started writing.
I wanted to write the sort of book I would have wanted to pick up. Something exciting and imaginative, but also something you could get lost in without feeling like reading it was hard work.
Eventually, that idea became Strange Emotions.
I became the person I probably didn’t expect to become
I first published Strange Emotions nearly ten years ago.
At the time, becoming an author was a huge achievement for me. Someone who had struggled with reading had actually written an entire novel.
But life carried on after that, and I’ve done quite a lot in those ten years.
I’ve built and run my own business, employed and managed a team and learned what it actually takes to turn an idea into something real.
I also decided to go back into education as a mature student.
Despite being dyslexic, I graduated with a BA (Hons) in TV & Film Production and went on to gain experience working within film and television production. I’ve worked across different areas of production, including projects such as All My Friends Hate Me, Sea Dragon and Netflix’s Infamy.
I’ve written scripts, been a scriptwriting finalist, worked on my own film ideas and continued developing my skills in writing, filmmaking, editing and visual storytelling.
I’ve also had the opportunity to speak on BBC radio, appear in local media and contribute as a guest blogger.
My career probably looks a little random written down!
But actually, there’s one thing connecting almost all of it.
Creativity.
I’ve always loved creating things, whether that’s a business, a film idea, a character or an entire imaginary world.
Ten years later…
I could have left Strange Emotions where it was. But I never really stopped thinking about it.
I’ve grown up with this story. I’ve changed as a person, learned more about writing, studied film and storytelling and had experiences I simply didn’t have when I wrote the original. So nearly ten years later, I decided to go back.
I’m now preparing a completely revised Author’s Definitive Edition of Strange Emotions: The Black Legend – Book One.
I’m not trying to turn it into a completely different story. Chloe, the Black Legend and the heart of the book are still there. I’m simply telling the story better. And strangely, coming back to the book has also brought me back to something I cared about when I first started writing.
Dyslexic readers.
Why this still matters to me
I don’t believe someone should miss out on brilliant stories simply because reading is harder for them. And I definitely don’t think accessible books have to mean simple stories. Give me mystery. Give me fantasy. Give me strange worlds, secrets, romance, danger and characters I can become completely obsessed with.
Just let me enjoy getting there. That’s what I want to explore through my writing and through Fidgety Fox Publishing.
I want someone who hasn’t finished a book in years to be able to pick one up and think, I’ll just read one chapter… And then realise they’ve read five. That’s the feeling I want.
And this is only the beginning
My dream for Fidgety Fox is much bigger than publishing my own books. As it grows, I’d love to work with other dyslexic and neurodivergent writers and creatives. There must be so many incredible stories sitting in people’s heads because they’ve convinced themselves they’re “not good at writing” or that publishing isn’t for people like them.
I understand that feeling.
I’m dyslexic.
And yet I’ve been a businesswoman and employer, university graduate, published author, scriptwriter and film and television creative.
None of those things happened because dyslexia suddenly disappeared. I just found my own way of doing them. That’s something I want Fidgety Fox to stand for too. Different doesn’t mean less capable. Sometimes we just need a different way in.
Strange Emotions
My first story is where this journey started, so it feels right that it’s also where the next chapter begins.
Strange Emotions: The Black Legend – Book One follows Chloe Day as the life she thought she understood begins to unravel, pulling her into a world of transformation, hidden family history, danger and a truth about herself that changes everything.
The new Author’s Definitive Edition will be published by Fidgety Fox Publishing on 30 November 2026. Book two will be announced soon.
Nearly ten years after I first introduced Chloe to the world…
I’m finally ready to introduce her again.
Amie x
